==============================================================================================

The Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships wrapped up in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia on July 26, 2002 with the Canadian team placing the best they ever have. Canada ranked 7th for the Volvo Trophy, which is given to the country with the best results across all classes. This was a significant improvement from last year's 18th place ranking in France. Jen Spalding from Vancouver, British Columbia won the gold medal in the Byte Girl class, the highest finish for the Canadian team. She is the first Canadian woman to win gold at the Youth Worlds. Fellow Vancouverite Mike Leigh was the next highest finish, placing 4th in the Laser Boy class. His performance improved greatly throughout the week after being disqualified from the first race due to an early start.

 In the 29er Boys class, Trevor McEwen and Chris Hewson finished 7th while the 29er Girls team of Maddy Purves-Smith and Cassidy Richardson placed 9th. Mistral Girl Lisa McKenzie finished 10th and Mistral Boy Mike Hayes placed 11th overall.
